The Jersey City Art and Studio Tour (JCAST) in its 34th year moves under the umbrella of Art Fair 14C and becomes part of a larger Jersey City Art Week in October 2023.

JCAST began as an invitation to visit artists’ studios, retailers and other downtown spaces, including the historic 111 First Street art collective and has been re-imagined several times over the ensuing decades.

The original artist studio tour was started in 1990 by Charles Kessler and Pat Donnelly of Gold Coast Magazine (a Jersey Journal weekly).

From 1994 to 2013 it was presented by nonprofit Pro Arts, a professional artist membership organization, in partnership with the City of Jersey City, and then the City’s Office of Cultural Affairs took over sole operations from 2014 through 2022.

In 2023 JCAST will become part of a larger Jersey City Art Week, which will also include the 5th Edition of Art Fair 14C and the 30th International Sculpture Center Conference.

A steering committee will work to provide advice, expertise and long-term planning for Art Week.

Q. What will be different about JCAST in 2023?

That’s still an evolving answer.  If you had already planned to curate an exhibition or open your studio during JCAST, the proceedure will be largely the same – you will register on the website and be put on the JCAST map.

There will be several different JCAST maps and guides available to visitors – by neighborhood and by genre of visual art.

There will be at least four group exhibition spaces downtown.

Q. When can I register for JCAST?

There will be an open call for curators for the group exhibition spaces in May.  Registration for exhibition venues and artist open studios will begin in early June.

There will also be open calls for the group shows over the summer.

Q. I have more questions!

We held an information session on Wednesday, April 19. Notes from the meeting are available here and the recording is available on the Jersey City Art and Studio Tour Facebook page. As we continue planning, your input will help us make this year’s studio tour a stellar event. Please fill out a brief survey and contact JCAST director Tina Maneca with any questions — jcast@artfair14c.com.
