The Showcase
THE SHOWCASE
A unique element of Art Fair 14C is The Showcase, which provides an exhibition space at the fair for individual artists, giving them greater exposure to collectors, galleries and museums.
At Art Fair 14C, The Showcase is open to artists who live, or have a studio, in the state of New Jersey.
Showcase artists also receive lifetime attendence to Art Fair 14C for themselves and a guest, as well as exhibition and residency opportunities during the rest of the year.
Showcase FAQs
Q. What is the venue in 2023?
The 5th Edition of Art Fair 14C is returning to the Jersey City waterfront, but to an exciting new venue. We’ll be in the CRRNJ Terminal Building in Liberty State Park. There will be ample parking as well as ferry and shuttle service – and spectacular views of New York City!
Q. Who are the judges?
We change our Showcase judges every year – they are art world experts who do not live or work in New Jersey.
We are pleased to have as our judges in 2023:
David Baskin – an acclaimed artist who was one of the original members of the Brooklyn-based non-profit art organization Smack Mellon. His one-person exhibitions include Freight+Volume Gallery, NYC; Sculpture Center, NYC; Arts Brookfield, Grace Building Lobby, NYC ; Ingalls & Assoc., Miami, Fl and Black and White Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Selected group exhibitions include the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; Marianne Boesky Gallery, NYC; Grassi Museum, Leipzig, Germany. Honors and awards include Dieu Donne Fellowship; NYC; McDowell Fellowship, NH; Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Yaddo Fellowship, NY.
Baskin has taught at the Cooper Union School of Art, New York Institute of Technology and was a visiting critic at the School of Visual Arts, NYC; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, University of Buffalo, NY and University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
You can read about his latest show at sculpturemagazine.art.
Nina Kong-Surtees – the brains behind smART Advisory, Kong-Surtees is a creative, entrepreneurial, and collaborative Art Legacy Advisor with 20 years of experience in the art, design, tech, and luxury industries. She wore many colorful hats while developing legacy plans, art collection management, and business strategies for artists at renowned artist-endowed estates/foundations, non-profit art centers, art galleries, and museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In addition to her extensive experience as an art educator and advisor, Kong-Surtees focuses on the intersection between fine arts and technology as a mentor and collaborator on Web3 platforms to cultivate the next generation of thriving artists.
Jen Wallace – as co-founder of nAscent Art New York, Wallace has led the success of nAscent’s project development and art direction. In her role, Wallace helps clients acquire fine art for leading hotels around the world, select corporate offices, and significant building lobbies.
A multifaceted arts professional, Wallace has also produced dozens of exhibitions and events viewed by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, speaks on panels to discuss art and artists. She also consults galleries, individuals, institutions, and organizations on artists trending in the marketplace.
Q. Will The Showcase have the same numbers of artists and exhibition space as last year?
The Showcase has changed every year – in part because of our venues, and in part because of the kinds of artists who are selected by our judges (19 sculptors and 3D artists in 2022!).
In 2023 we will not have the space for 48 Showcase artists. We have set aside an entire room for the Showcase, but we will likely have to get creative with space planning once we have the results from the judges.
Q. What else is new in 2023?
Art Fair 14C is now part of a larger Art Week in Jersey City, with both the International Sculpture Center’s Annual Conference and the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) happening concurrently.
We believe that the larger Art Week events will attract even more visitors to Art Fair 14C, which will be the centerpiece of the Art Week events.
Our new venue is smaller than last year’s Armory, and has some quirky spaces. We anticipate that due to space issues, fewer artists will be selected for The Showcase in 2023 than in 2022.
