Mission & VISION

Mission

Project 14C is a program of ARTS 14C, which has been an arts organization for six years, with a 4-fold mission:

  • increase opportunities for artists
  • expand public access to fine art
  • strengthen careers in the arts
  • activate underrecognized arts communities

Although Art Fair 14C has primarily focused on the visual arts over the first six years of its existence, Project 14C is open to artists of all disciplines.

VISION

A program of ARTS 14C, Project 14C is an innovative co-living community designed for fine artists, filmmakers, writers, architects, chefs, and performance artists – all the creative arts.

We believe that creativity flourishes in a vibrant, supportive and affordable community. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment where diverse talents can come together to live, work, and inspire one another, while building the foundation for a lasting career in the arts with professional development & mentorship.

Project 14C offers modern, comfortable and subsidized studio living spaces and art facilities for our residents. The program period is one year, with a limited number of 3-month residencies.

Both Jersey City and neighboring New York City are arts-rich municipalities with manifold opportunities for artists of all kinds, and Project 14C and its partners will help artists make the connections needed to flourish.

Artists have been coming to the New York City area for decades (centuries!) to pursue their dreams, but it can be a daunting and expensive struggle for an artist on their own. Project 14C can provide help entering to the New York art world, as well as the time to build a foundation for a lasting career in the arts.

We believe in the transformative power of the arts on a society, and having a concentration of artists in the Powerhouse Arts District will be of benefit to both the artists and the wider community.

Though exhibition and performance will be facilitated, there are no creative requirements for the Project 14C residency program. We do ask each artist for a minimum of 1.5 hours per month of volunteer time (18 hours over the course of the year). That volunteer time can be spent within the program – gallery sitting, painting murals, moving furniture etc – or it can be spent within the greater community – Project 14C is connected to numerous nonprofits in the arts and other sectors. Being an active part of the community, furthering your practice, and exploring the options of the area are what we ask of the participating artists.
