free studio space for special projects
There are three upcoming Special Project Residency sessions – each session with a maximum of 5 special projects.
Project 14C provides free studio space to individual artists (or groups of collaborating artists) of all disciplines to create and complete projects during the time period.
Studios will be open to the public on one weekend during the middle of the residency, allowing the community to experience the works in progress and talk to the artists.
The completed projects will then be shown to the public on the residency’s final weekend.

FAQs
Where is the Special Residency?
The residency is part of Project 14C, which occupies 125,000 square feet of arts incubator and maker space on three floors of the historic 150 Bay building in the Powerhouse Arts District of downtown Jersey City.
The Project 14C entrance is at 157B 1st Street, two blocks from the Grove Street PATH Station, which is two stops from Manhattan.
What is meant by “special project”?
The typical Project 14C residency is a long-term, 12-month residency with a focus on career development. The Special Project Residency is for creative projects, in any artistic discipline, that be completed in the shorter time period of the residency, and that can utilize the large spaces we provide. Project 14C has five large studios for this residency, and we’d like to see proposals for projects that might not be able to be accomplished without the facilities we offer.
What kind of projects are you looking for?
We’re open to almost anything and everything – and the projects can be the work of a single artist, or a group of artists.
This is an opportunity to provide artists of all disciplines with large workspaces and a creative environment. If you have had a project on the back burner because of lack of space, this might be the perfect opportunity. We’re looking for interesting projects, ones that can engage the public but aren’t necessarily commercial.
We’ll be considering all kinds of arts proposals – whether a series of large paintings, an installation, a textile workshop, play rehearsal, short film production, fashion design, creative placemaking etc – we’re open to all creative endeavors that can result in finished work that can be experienced by the public on the residency’s closing weekend. The public will also be invited in for an open studio weekend in the middle of the residency.
Are there any restrictions on project proposals?
Yes – because Project 14C is in an historic landmark building, we cannot allow artistic practices that involve open flame, dust or toxic fumes – that includes aerosols, some oil paint media and spray fixatives.
Artists must respect the rules of the building, the timeline of the residency, and must be present during public open hours.
What kind of studios are available, what kind of facilities do they have?
The 5 studios range in size from 877 sq ft (81.5 sq m) to 1504 sq ft (140 sq m), have concrete floors and ceiling heights of between 10 and 12 feet (it’s an industrial space, so pipes, ducts and beams mean ceiling height can vary). Each studio has two bathrooms and a kitchenette. There is furniture available for use by residency artists, and artists will have 7-day, 24-hour access to their studios.
Can I live in the studio space as well as work there?
Yes, the studios are available as work-only or live/work, and if requested, you will be permitted to live in your studio during the residency. There are beds (single or king) available, as well as other furnishings.
Will I be able to participate in the Project 14C programming provided to the 12-month residents?
Yes, some of the programming will be open to Special Project residents, though our long-term residency artists will get first priority if a program has attendance limits.
What happens during the open public days?
On each public day all studios will be open to the public for a period of three hours.
Mid-residency it’s a chance for the community’s art lovers to meet the artists and observe the creative process. You can plan on working during that time, but with the awareness that your work time will have some public interaction.
By the final weekend the special projects should all be complete, and the artists will be present to engage with the public.
The studio space is really free?
Yes, the studio space is free – but there is a charge for utilities (electricity, water, Wi-Fi, key app) of $300 for the entire residency period, payable upon acceptance.
For artists using the space as live/work, the total charges are $1000 for the approximately three month residency, payable upon acceptance.
What if I can’t pay the utility fee?
There is a section on the application for an explanation of special circumstances that could result in a full or partial fee waiver.
