I Would Prefer Not To

Based on Herman Melville’s “Bartelby the Scrivner” and his singular repeated line … “I would prefer not to.”
Melville’s story has always been looked at as a protest against capitalism and what ultimately happens to non conformists within that system.
This show will look at the broader implications of non conformity and how artists work in the periphery of the system even as art has become commodified in so many ways.
What happens to an artist or person who prefers not to?
Imagine not being on social media, or in a political party, or being engaged in the “us versus them” status quo of the day.
What is non conformity in a system that is all pervasive?

No Judgments: an uncurated show
Venue: Brunswick Center

Open to all residents of Hudson County for a $10 fee. The only restrictions on the art are that it must be no more than 40″x40″ in dimensions and must be ready to hang on a wall.
All submissions accepted as space allows.

Tickled Pink
Venue: Newport Mall, ground floor center court
Open to all artists, but because of the 24-hour acessibility of the mall, all artwork must be framed and/or able to be secured to a wall.
The color pink must be an essential element of the work, it need not be the dominant hue.

Venue: Art150 lobby gallery

Open to all artists and visual arts media, but all work submitted must be named “Untitled” (variations, such as Untitled XII or Untitled (Blue) are also acceptable).
Visitors during JCAST will be encouraged to “title” the works of art themselves on post-it notes on the wall, increasing the level of audience engagement with the art.
